Once accepted into an apprenticeship program, you will receive on-the-job training. This involves working under the supervision of experienced metal fabricators. Successfully completing the apprenticeship program will qualify you as a skilled metal fabricator, ready for entry-level positions in the field. Ability to read drawings / specifications. Working to customer specifications. Trim, file, grind, deburr, buff or smooth surfaces, seams or joints of assembled parts, using hand tools or portable power tools. Shape metal material over blocks or other forms, using hand tools. Lay out, measure and mark dimensions and reference lines on material in accordance with the drawing or template, using calculators, scribes, dividers, squares and rulers. Fabricate or alter parts using shears, hammers, punches or drills. Safe use of hand tools. Safe use of guillotine, band saw and pedestal drills. Ability to cut materials to size. Completion of job cards. Use of general measuring equipment. General manual handling and moving materials safely. Safe handling of components, jigs and fixtures. Maintain equipment, making repairs or modifications when necessary. Working on own initiative. Operate heavy machinery.
