In a significant development for the education sector in Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the central government has approved the establishment of an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) near Guwahati. 

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for this "special gift" to the people of Assam. The upcoming IIM in Guwahati will be mentored by the prestigious IIM Ahmedabad. 

Over the past 18 months, the state government had presented a strong case to the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, and the Education Ministry, offering premier land and logistical support for this endeavour. 

Hailing the establishment of the IIM as a "game-changer" for Assam, CM Sarma envisions the state becoming an education hub in Eastern India. He emphasised the potential for these premier institutes to collaborate among themselves and with industry to unleash the power of multidisciplinary education, thereby fulfilling Assam's economic aspirations. 

The Site Selection Committee has finalised the plot situated in the Marabhita area in Kamrup district near Guwahati for the establishment of the IIM. IIM Ahmedabad has been requested to take further initiatives for the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in consultation with the Secretary of the Higher Education Department of the Assam government. 

The establishment of the IIM in Guwahati is expected to provide a significant boost to the education sector in Assam and contribute to the state's overall development.
