The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani has inaugurated a new Centre for Research Excellence in National Security (CRENS) at its Hyderabad campus. This significant initiative aims to bolster the nation's security capabilities through the development of indigenous technology, joint research, skill development, and entrepreneurship. 

Details of the Inauguration 

The inauguration ceremony of CRENS was held on August 7, 2024, at the BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus. The event was graced by Dr. G Satheesh Reddy, Former Secretary DD R&D, Former Chairman of DRDO, and Former Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, who served as the Chief Guest. The centre's website was launched by Dr. BHVS Narayana Murthy, Vice Chancellor of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology, and Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, AVSM, VSM, Director General of Medical Services, Navy. Major General C. S. Mann, VSM, Additional Director General of the Army Design Bureau (ADB), and Shri Amit Garg, IPS, Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), unveiled the centre's brochure and a compendium of ongoing projects.  

Objectives of CRENS 

CRENS aims to support India's self-reliance in the national security domain through collaboration with key stakeholders such as DRDO, ISRO, DAE, Tri-services, Paramilitary Forces, Police, Defence PSUs, and industries. The strategic focus of CRENS is divided into three main verticals:  

- Skill Development: Offering hybrid courses, both online and offline, to enhance the skill sets of professionals in the national security domain. 

- Research: Conducting research to provide practical solutions to service personnel. 

- Innovation: Promoting innovation by encouraging startups in defence, space, and other strategic areas crucial for the nation's needs.
