Indian students have once again showcased their exceptional talent on the global stage by winning gold and silver medals at the 2024 International Physics and Chemistry Olympiads. The 54th IPhO was held from July 21 to July 29, 2024, in Isfahan, Iran, while the 56th IChO took place from July 21 to July 30, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Physics Olympiad  

Indian students secured a total of five medals at the 54th International Physics Olympiad: 

- Gold Medals: Rhythm Kedia (Raipur, Chhattisgarh) and Ved Lahoti (Indore, Madhya Pradesh) 

- Silver Medals: Akarsh Raj Sahay (Nagpur, Maharashtra), Bhavya Tiwari (Noida, Uttar Pradesh), and Jaiveer Singh (Kota, Rajasthan)  

India was placed fourth overall, tied with Vietnam, while China, Russia, and Romania took the top three spots. A total of 193 students from 43 countries participated in the event, which awarded 18 gold, 35 silver, and 53 bronze medals.  

The theoretical component of the competition included problems on global warming due to the greenhouse effect, trapping of ions using the Paul trap and Doppler cooling techniques, and the dynamics and stability of an accreting binary star system. The experimental tasks involved heat conduction through a copper rod and diffraction from phase steps.  

Chemistry Olympiad  

At the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad, the Indian team also performed exceptionally well, winning four medals: 

- Gold Medal: Devesh (Jalgaon, Maharashtra) 

- Silver Medals: Avaneesh (Kota, Rajasthan) and Harshin (Hyderabad, Telangana) 

- Bronze Medal: Kashyap (Mumbai, Maharashtra)  

The competition featured both theoretical and experimental components. The theoretical problems covered diverse chemical fields, including semiconducting metal oxides, dopamine production, penicillin synthesis, and polymer formation. The experimental tasks included identifying colour transition pHs of acid-base indicator dyes through thin-layer chromatography and performing mass-based titrations of potassium permanganate.
