Overview of the PhD Studentship 

This PhD studentship is funded jointly by Rolls-Royce and the Centre for Logistics, Procurement and Supply Chain Management (CLPSCM) within Cranfield University's School of Management. The research aims to develop new insights on how to cascade and deploy agile methodologies to sub-tiers in manufacturing supply chains for advanced engineering systems. 

Research Focus 

The project will explore the application of agile methodologies, originally used in software development, to the procurement practices in advanced manufacturing supply chains. The research will address the following key questions: 

  • How can agile methodologies be effectively deployed at the interfirm level in new product development (NPD) for complex engineering systems? 
  • What are the challenges of implementing agile methodologies in procurement contracts for complex engineering systems, and how can these be overcome? 

Expected Outcomes 

The research is expected to make significant academic and practical contributions, including: 

  • Developing a framework for agile procurement practices in advanced manufacturing. 
  • Providing actionable insights for industry practitioners. 
  • Contributing to the academic literature on supply chain management and agile methodologies. 

Eligibility and Application Process 

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Applicants must hold a first or upper second-class UK Bachelor’s degree, a taught Master’s degree, and an IELTS test minimum score of 7 or an equivalent international qualification. 
  • A background in engineering management, supply chain management/procurement, or operations management is preferred.

Interested candidates should submit their application through the Cranfield University website, including a research proposal, academic transcripts, and references. 

Funding and Support 

The studentship provides a bursary of up to £19,237 per year (tax-free) plus fees for three years. This funding opportunity is open to UK and international students.
