The idea of studying abroad at your dream destination is exhilarating, but the journey can be overwhelming. From choosing the university to getting admission into the course of your choice, sorting the finances, and getting your visa, the steps seem to be endless. Things are a tad more challenging amid the pandemic as you have to consider the vaccination, visa, and travel norms too. By the time you are ready to fly overseas, you will probably be exhausted.
When it comes to the final stage of preparation, packing will be on top of your mind. You cannot expect it to be as simple as preparing for a foreign holiday. Rather, you will have to carry a lot of stuff, and there are always chances of missing something important. Now that most countries are opening for international students, it is a good time to brush up on your basics on packing for the new life abroad. Here is a complete packing checklist you can rely on.
Flying abroad in the new normal is more complicated than ever before. You must have all your regular travel documents such as a valid passport, visa, itinerary, plane tickets, ISIC card, and mandated travel insurance in place. Additionally, you need a WHO-approved vaccine certificate to enter the country where you want to study. Check your passport and visa dates to prevent last-minute issues. Have these papers in your carry-on as you may have to present them at immigration. It makes sense to have digital copies of all the papers to prevent hassles in case of losing or misplacing them.
Apart from the essential travel documents, you will also require the college paperwork to get started with life on campus. The list of essentials includes your offer letter, official academic transcripts and degree certifications, and other profile-related documents. You will also need your study permit and prescribed books and supplies to go ahead with your studies.
Perhaps the most important thing you will need as an international student is money. Carry enough cash to get you through, but avoid having too much because it elevates the risk of loss. You must have local currency in various denominations, along with coins to hire trolleys and make phone calls. An international debit/credit card is a safe option for the flight and when you land at your destination.
Most popular international education destinations have cold climates. If you plan to travel to the US, Canada, UK, Germany, or Ireland, you will need lots of warm air to stay cosy in the harsh weather. Carry casual and formal attire, swimwear, and exercise clothing. You will need heavy sweaters, jackets, blazers as well. Make sure you have enough pieces to wear to college, work, and social events. But it is crucial to load too much because you may end up carrying more luggage than permissible limits. Carry some stuff for the warmer weather too.
Apart from the weather-appropriate clothing, you will also need accessories. These include shoes, socks, mufflers, gloves, innerwear, towels, and handkerchiefs. Pack enough to last for a year because you will probably not return home for that long. These items can be expensive at your international education destination, so stocking up for a year is a sensible choice.
As a student, you will need essential gadgets like your laptop, tablet, and headphones for studies. It is a good idea to have an MP3 Player/ iPod to stay occupied during long flights and train rides. You will probably want to carry a camera, memory cards, chargers, and adapters. A portable backup charger can be your best friend on a long flight.
Your packing list also includes travel basics to keep you comfortable during the long flight. A travel pillow, blanket, earplugs, and eye mask are must-haves. Carrying a pen to fill out customs forms is a good idea so that you need not struggle to borrow one. Other items you will need at your hostel or temporary accommodation include pillowcases, bed sheets, towels, and wash cloths. Remember to pack small items like a folding umbrella, a few hangers, and a sewing kit.
