The educational ties between India and Australia are all set to grow stronger with the recent developments in this area. After the announcement regarding the opening of Australian university campuses in GIFT City, (read article on https://lurnabroad.com/australian-universities-are-all-set-to-open-indian-campuses/) Gujarat, another major step has been taken in that direction.

During his visit to India, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese launched the ‘Australia-India education qualification recognition mechanism’. The step is a part of the most comprehensive initiative agreed to by India with another country. Let us highlight it in detail.

WHAT IS THE “AUSTRALIA-INDIA EDUCATION QUALIFICATION RECOGNITION MECHANISM”?

Essentially, the mechanism means that the educational degrees obtained in Australia will be recognised in India. Likewise, Indian degrees will be valid in Australia. It is great news for international students from both countries as they can pursue their career aspirations anywhere in India or Australia, regardless of where they completed their education.

While India has a similar agreement with other countries including the US, this one is broader because it includes online courses. Additionally, it also covers courses to be taught in the standalone campuses of Australian universities in India.

However, the arrangement does not apply to professional registrations in medicine, engineering, and law as of now.

MAITRI- ANOTHER BONUS FOR INDIAN STUDENTS

Besides the recognition of Indian degrees in Australia and the launch of Australian university campuses in India, there is more to celebrate for Indian students. The new ‘Maitri’ scholarship will support high-achieving Indian students to study in Australia for a four-year period.

The $ 11.2 million scholarship initiative is a part of the Maitri (friendship) programme that endeavors to enhance educational, cultural and community ties between the two countries. The scholarship encompasses Australia’s top academic and research institutions, specifically in health and STEM fields.

These developments in the higher education field open new opportunities for Indian students looking for international experience but falling short due to limitations of resources. They can now fulfill the dream of studying and working abroad through education in Indian campuses of Australian universities, bilaterally-recognised credentials, and Maitri scholarships.
