France passed a controversial immigration law with new measures for international students, including a deposit for student visas, higher tuition for non-EU students, and proof of serious study. Business schools worried it could hurt France's global competitiveness.

 

IIT Kanpur Sets New Record for Intellectual Property Filings

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has achieved an impressive milestone in 2023 by filing 122 new intellectual property rights (IPRs). This brings the total number of IPR filings by the prestigious technology institute to over 1,000. The new patents from IITK cover a wide range of advanced domains including medical technology, nanotechnology, and innovative healthcare solutions. Some examples are a portable medical suction device and a continuous lung health monitoring system.

 

UK Group Expands into Australia with Performing Arts School Acquisition

Global Education Holdings purchased the Australian Performing Arts Conservatory, which provides undergraduate degrees in acting, film, music and dance. The acquisition is part of the UK group's international expansion to offer innovative practical training to students. Financial terms are still pending for the deal between Global Education and the Australian Conservatory.

 

Study Finds Only 1.6% of US Jobs Open to Global Talent

A new analysis by F1 Hire of over 700,000 job postings found only 1.6% were deemed friendly to international applicants, based on the firm's International Talent Friendliness Index. The ITFI measures a company's willingness to accept global talent. F1 Hire hopes growing awareness of the ITFI's low percentage will encourage more employers to diversify their applicant pool. The organisation aims to increase the index tenfold. The daily ITFI results are published on F1 Hire's website to empower international job seekers with transparency.


University of Wisconsin increasing International Student Enrolment

The University of Wisconsin aims to increase international student enrolment by 8% by 2028 to recover from COVID-19, bridge the gap with neighbouring states to improve finances and diversity, address workforce shortages in high-demand fields like health, engineering, data and business through partnership with Shorelight and have introduced a $32M workforce plan.

Record High for German Workforce, But Decline May Loom

IBM Partners with Leading Universities for Quantum Education

IBM has announced a collaboration with Keio University, The University of Tokyo, Yonsei University, Seoul National University, and The University of Chicago to provide quantum education to students. The goal is to train up to 40,000 students over the next 10 years in quantum skills to prepare them for the global quantum workforce and ecosystem. The initiative will develop materials for educators across science and technology disciplines, with a focus on building a skilled quantum workforce for discovery and industry applications.
