ABOUT AIX-MARSEILLE UNIVERSITY
Aix-Marseille University was established by Decree No. 2011-1010 of 24 August 2011. It entered into force on 1 January 2012, replacing the University of Provence, the Mediterranean and Paul-Cézanne. Today is one of the youngest universities in France, it is also the largest by number of students, its staff and its budget. It is also the largest francophone university. All assets, beyond the results already visible in the field of education and research, which are of Aix-Marseille University an institution of higher education and research excellence. The late nineteenth century until 1968, the faculty was grouped together in the University of Aix-Marseille chaired by the Rector of the Academy. Under the law of 12 November 1968, the university is divided into three schools: Aix-Marseille I (University of Provence) and Aix-Marseille II were created in 1970 (Aix-Marseille II, named University of the Mediterranean 1994) and Aix-Marseille III in 1973 (named Paul Cézanne in 2004). Nearly 40 years later, in June 2007, the three universities of Aix-Marseille have expressed their willingness to merge to create Aix-Marseille University (AMU). The fusion is then built, step by step, according to a schedule which, after long debates, the various stages of being validated by a vote of the Board of Directors of each university.
