These quick tests provide results on-site, extending the options available to analysts. The methods used are chemical or microbiological in nature, made portable by microelectronics. By the end of this unit you should be able to: Appreciate the range of test kits available for determining some of the key parameters defining water quality on-site. Appreciate the criteria involved in obtaining a representative sample and carrying out fit-for-purpose measurements. Understand the chemical principles underpinning portable colourimetric, titrimetric and non-photometric instrumental test kits and the technical considerations which make portability possible. Understand the operation of a portable bioluminescence unit for ATP testing. Recognise the health and safety requirements of carrying out field measurements.
